Gold find to be exhibited at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery
Posted by Paul McSweeney in World News on September 25th, 2009
You may well have heard about the harvest of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver so beautiful it brought tears to the eyes of one expert, has poured out of a Staffordshire field – the largest hoard of gold from the period ever found. The weapons and helmet decorations, coins and Christian crosses amount to more than 1500 pieces, with hundreds still embedded in blocks of soil. It adds up to 5kg of gold – three times the amount found in the famous Sutton Hoo ship burial in 1939 – and 2.5kg of silver, and may be the swag from a spectacularly successful raiding party of warlike Mercians, some time around AD700. The most important pieces will be on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, (one of our clients!) from tomorrow until Tuesday October 13, and will then go to the British Museum for valuation – a process which will involve another marathon collaboration between experts. Their best guess today is “millions”.
Longmynd Hike Team suffers injury!
Posted by David Harrison in World News on September 16th, 2009
We are getting closer to the Longmynd Hike and unfortunately one of the team has sustained an injury! Such is his dedication he is going to have the MRI scan this week, but things don’t look good.
The boys who are left and a local lady had a training walk this weekend over the Malvern Hills and completed 17.5 miles in less than 5 hours, which I think is pretty impressive. Unfortunately due to prior commitments I am unable to take the injured team person’s place but will certainly be attending to wish them well as they commence their epic trek!
Please donate via http://bit.ly/8GK18 or to the charities directly. We appreciate your support!
David Cameron condemns Tweeters as tw*ts
Posted by Phil Page in Thoughts & Opinions, World News on July 29th, 2009
The Register’s recent article perfectly illustrates that people should be more careful about what they say regarding new technologies and the people that use them, especially if you’re trying to get into Number 10.
Cameron has definitely risked alienating a large demographic by slatting the people who use Twitter and it’ll be interesting to see what other foibles he can make in the future.
Longmynd Hike Sponsorship Forms
Posted by David Harrison in World News on July 28th, 2009
I mentioned last week that my brother and some of his friends were going to do The Longmynd Hike this year and that Severn Internet would be sponsoring them. They are looking to raise money for two very worthwhile charities, with one of them, MacMillan Nurses, being a charity I have raised money for myself in the past through Round Table.
It will be interesting to see how well this Blog and also the various Tweets I make help the sponsorship drive! I am not overly precious about being the only logo on their clothing, so if anyone else would like to sponsor them directly (except any competitors obviously!) please let me know by replying to this post.
The sponsorship form is attached, so please feel free to download and raise even more money! Long Mynd Sponsorship Form
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bishops Castle Beer festival a great success ….

Well, I hope you managed to get along to the Bishops Castle Beer Festival as suggested … a great time was had by all and all the pubs I visited seemed to be doing a roaring trade so good luck to them and if you didn’t manage to make it this year, make sure you do next time!
e-retailers..how bright is the future..
Posted by Paul McSweeney in World News on July 9th, 2009
In 2004, analysts predicted that a quarter of retail spending would be made online by 2009. Now some are saying that it will only be 10% by 2013. Shoppers it would seem prefer to buy from brands that they already know and trust..hence the success of the online arms of Tesco, Next, Argos, HMV inter alia.
But there are some notable successes..and how have they got this right? Take ASOS for example..their success has been based upon choice and the ability to fulfil rapid delivery. Enabling buyers to have the option to return their items is also become increasingly important.
If you take fashion retail; this makes up for 22% of all site traffic for e-retailers; so companies operating in this sector must find competitive advantages where they can. I think that flexible delivery is key. Shoppers making impulse purchases want not only rapid delivery but also hassle free delivery. They don’t want the item delivered when they are not in for example. Going to the Post Office to pick up the item can take time out of your day and dampen your online retail experience considerably.
But the rub here is that e-retailers want to keep costs low for customers; so flexible delivery options are not an option in some cases..so whoever comes up with the way to solve this in a way that e-retailers can provide choice (that’s their responsibility, not yours) and flexible delivery at a low cost (Home Delivery Network – they say they can do it but not at the cost e-retailers want to charge their customers) will really be on to something; and be courted by e-retailers and consumers alike!
Bishops Castle Beer Festival
Posted by David Harrison in World News on July 7th, 2009
This weekend sees the annual Bishops Castle Beer Festival taking place on Friday 10th and Saurday 11th July. It is a great event even if you are not there to drink the beer. There are bands outside and most of the pubs have some form of food going on. If the weather is good it makes for a good day out with the kids.
If you want to stay for the duration and are a camping person we would naturally recommend our client The Three Tuns Brewery who run a camp site that is only staggering distance from the brewery itself which will of course be selling its beer. The Three Tuns Brewery is the oldest licenced brewery in the UK and I can personally recommend all their beers with Three Tuns XXX being my personal favourite!
The brewery is situated right next door to another client of ours The Three Tuns Inn. This particular pub will always hold a sentimental place in my own heart as it was here that we decided finally to quit the London rat race some moons ago! It is a great pub, full of character and unless things are different this year there will be a great band on in the space between the brewery and the pub.
Just up the road is The Castle Hotel which in my humble opinion has the finest garden of any pub in England (Yes they are a client too!), certainly of any pub in Bishop’s Castle. They tend to add a good range of Cornish Beers for the festival, and they are worth a visit just for the BBQ alone.
If these three fine establishments are not enough, and why should they be, there are yet more venues in this great town (Iam obviously not biased living just outside!) which are all worth a visit – The Vaults, The Kings Head, The Boars Head and The Six Bells. These aren’t clients so don’t get links!! But do give them a try – The Six Bells is another brewery and its beers can also be recommended – my personal favouite here is Cloud Nine which is where you will be if you have too mucch!
It is really a great day out and can certainly be recommended.
Severn Internet mourn the loss of MJ
Posted by Paul McSweeney in World News on July 6th, 2009
Many of us in here were growing up while Michael Jackson was in his prime..churning out classic after classic..each video way ahead of it’s time. His death has also highlighted the impact of the Internet in modern life. We have heard about sites crashing due to the sheer volume of traffic coming through when people had heard the news. Newspapers are way down on the list of news sources now..blogs, web sites can all give you the information you seek in real time..this is a marked difference and largely explains the sharp decline in newspaper sales in recent years.
Blogs have become the medium of choice for so many people now in terms of getting their news ..not only do successful bloggers keep their followers up-to-speed in real time but they offer a platform to engage in dialogue with fellow users with similar interests and to offer their own insight into a particular topic. This participative method of engagement is also the tool of choice for Severn Internet and a number of our clients are already reaping the benefits of having their blog..we set it up for them and they post as often as they can. We encourage them to add frequent posts because this is ESSENTIALto maintaining the interest of their followers.
Please contact us if you would like to find out more about our blog services.
