Foursquare founder slates Facebook Places
Posted by Paul McSweeney in Client News, Facebook, Social Networking on August 24th, 2010
Talking to The Telegraph, Dennis Crowley, said he had now had time to play around with Facebook’s new location tool, which directly rivals his own product by allowing people to share their location with their network, through checking into bars, clubs and restaurants on their mobile phone.
He said: “I have now had a chance to play around with Facebook Places and it’s not that great or interesting. It’s a pretty boring service, with barely any incentives for users to keep coming back and to tell their friends where they are.
“The only interesting thing about Places is that it has a potential audience of over 500 million people around the world… but that can only be a good thing for location-based services, like Foursquare, as Facebook will educate the masses about check-ins.”
Facebook declined to comment.
At the end of last week Facebook launched Places in the US.The new tool lets users share their location in a very similar fashion to popular location-based social networks such as Foursquare and Gowalla. People’s friends on the site can see if their friends are near them at any time, if they have chosen to check-into their current location.
US Facebook users need to update their iPhone Facebook app, or visit touch.facebook.com, to get access to the tool. A user then needs to select ‘Places’, tap the ‘Check-In’ button, and then a list of nearby places will come up on the screen. Facebook members then can choose the place which matches their location, and if its not on the list, they can search for it or add it.
Once ‘checked in’, the activity will be posted in a user’s news feed and come up in the ‘Recent Activity’ section on the specific location’s page.
Crowley believes that Foursqaure’s gaming mechanics, such as the prospect of a user becoming the ‘mayor’ of a location they have visited the most frequently, will keep people far more enticed into using his service over the likes of Places. He has also firmly rebuffed the notion that Facebook’s new tool will blow Foursquare out of the water.
“I always knew Facebook would launch a check-in tool. I knew that on the day we started creating Foursquare. But I also knew that people needed incentives to keep checking-in and sharing their location. Facebook could copy our games ideas, but we are working on a raft of new mechanics which we hope will keep Foursquare fresh and ‘check-in fatigue’ away.” He declined to divulge any details of new features in the pipeline out of fear of rivals copying the plans afoot.
Crowley also offered a glimpse of his vision of Foursquare’s long-term future. “In the future, I want Foursquare to be able to tell people where to go wherever they are in the world, based on their previous visiting habits, likes and dislikes and the time of day…We want to be able to push venue suggestions to you. That’s what I am pushing towards as we develop Foursquare’s tools and how we use our data,” he explained.
Facebook has said it is working with the likes Foursquare and Yelp, to develop Places. Crowley said that Places’s open API means that people checking in on Foursquare will be able to push this information through to the Places feed and vice versa. However, Foursquare have yet to turn this capability on – but will do within “the next two weeks”. And Crowley confirmed this would not be a commercial arrangement.
Crowley said he had no regrets about not being acquired by Facebook, having “had conversations” about it in the past, as he was not ready to let go of the business.
He did admit though that Facebook’s head start with more than 500 million members, versus Foursquare’s near three million registered users, was a “little scary”.
The location-based social network signed up it two millionth member in July, three months after acquiring its first million users.

Who could it be? The clue was in the debate Chris had last Friday about problems with the window blinds with Moira Stuart. Bob, being the helpful chap he is naturally contacted the show … and next thing you know he is on the radio grabbing his 3 minutes of fame.
We actually missed the show and have not yet found the clip in the podcast, but will post it up if it appears.
Well done Bob – and he really is great value for all types of blinds from venetian blinds to roller blinds so do check him out!.

Posted by David Harrison in Company News, New Contracts, Severn Internet News, Web Design, Web Development on November 16th, 2009
Further to the unfortunate voluntary liquidation announced last week by Waypoint Systems, Severn Internet are pleased to announce they have reached agreement with Waypoint to take over the management of Waypoint’s sites.
David Harrison, MD, said “It is always unfortunate when a company has to follow this course of action but our intention is to create as seamless a transfer as possible for clients of Waypoint. As a company we pride ourselves on our customer service and trust we will be able to build long term mutually beneficial relationships with our new clients. We will be contacting all the new clients over the next couple of days with the further intention of moving sites to our own servers as fast as possible. Any Waypoint clients we have not yet spoken to who have any questions should not hesitate to contact us on 01694 724899, where we are available to assist.”
The addition of Waypoint’s clients brings the total number of sites under our control to well in excess of 200. We are able to build and market a broad range of sites from basic content managed sites through to fully bespoke builds that integrate with your in house systems. If you would like to talk to us about developing your own site please do not hesitate to contact us.

Having a bit off a blogging hour!
Severn Internet are pleased to announce that we are currently working on the following projects:
The Drury, a high quality and rather large self catering house in Oban, have asked us to design and develop their new website.
Scotland’s Hotels of Distinction have also asked us to revamp the current site. The designs are almost fully approved and we should start building the new site next week.
One of our favourite clients, Burgoynes of Lyonshall, have also asked us to re develop their sites, to include more interaction with social media channels. This is in progress and should be ready soon.
The Station In at Marshbrook have received planning permission on their new project, a fantastic mountain biking centre and Wigwam accommodation centre. The blog should be up and running next week and the full site will follow before the year end.
Pimhill Farm is our first collaboration with Carl Jones Design. We have built the current static site and the new content managed version will be live for the weekend.
Woods of Shropshire have asked us to add additional functionality to their very successful site – take a look if you need some good ideas for Xmas presents or need a new shirt!
We are further working on a new travel site based on the Facebook model – a really exciting project that we will keep you up to date on over the next couple of months ..
Close to completion also are two larger projects for Culture Colony, an arts based site for all of Wales, and another of our favourite clients LHH Scotland where we have developed a fully integrated bespoke accommodation and property management system.

Three Tuns Brewery goes from strength to strength
Posted by David Harrison in Client News, Company News, Facebook, Thoughts & Opinions, Twitter on August 19th, 2009
I make no bones about the fact that John from the Three Tuns Brewery is one of my best mates, but that doesn’t guarantee you a mention on this blog! Even if you are the oldest licenced brewery in the UK!
I thought I should write up a little post about how well the brewery are doing. I played golf with John last Friday and he tells me that they are even getting business from Twitter now – which of course I will claim full credit for putting him onto! The Shropshire Star wrote a good article on his tweets last week – click here to read what they said.
In my opinion a brewery, like any other business, needs to have excellent customer service. Having a number of John’s clients as clients myself I know that they are really good, but it is the fact that certain things others fall down on are considered “de rigeur” that sets them apart – if I was running a pub I would want to know that my beer would arrive on time – apparently this is not a given in the licenced trade, but it is with The Three Tuns Brewery who have never been late with a delivery since John and Bill took it over.
They are really busy and approaching capacity again – John even suggested there might be a waiting list soon! My advice therefore is get in touch with them sooner rather than later – my personal recommendations would be the XXX and Clerics Cure beers – excellent, if a tad too moreish!
I’m sure John would also agree that their website, designed and built by Severn Internet of course, has not done them any harm either!
Culture Colony moves to full testing …
Posted by David Harrison in Company News, Facebook, New Contracts, Web Site Launches on July 23rd, 2009
Culture Colony is a great concept aimed at developing the Arts Community in Wales through collaboration and networking opportunities. It might almost be described as a mini Facebook where artists can showcase their work.
At present the site is still in test mode, but feel free to try it out and your comments will be much appreciated.
http://www.culturecolony.newsitetesting.co.uk/. The site includes some pretty clever video streaming so if you are looking for something similar please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
